Why Compaction Is Tested, Not Assumed

Load-bearing fill has to hit a number, and on most commercial jobs that number is 95 percent of maximum dry density. We reference a Standard Proctor (ASTM D698) for the target and verify the placed fill with a nuclear density gauge. A pad that fails compaction cracks the slab and voids the warranty, so the test is not a formality. It is the record your geotechnical engineer and lender will both ask to see.

Our Process

We confirm the fill spec from the geotechnical report, then bring in engineered fill or crushed aggregate base as the plan calls for. Material goes down in lifts sized for the compaction equipment, and each lift is rolled with a sheepsfoot or plate compactor and moisture conditioned as needed. We take density readings across the pad and hand over the documentation with the finished, certified surface.
